An estimated 8 million children around the world are reported missing each year. According to the latest U.S. Department of Justice research, an estimated 800,000 of those children will go missing in the United States.
National Missing Children’s Day was proclaimed by then-President Ronald Reagan on May 25, 1983, exactly four years after six-year-old Etan Patz disappeared from a New York City street on the way to school.
Today, through the work of The International Centre for Missing & Exploited Children (ICMEC), more than 20 countries are honoring International Missing Children’s Day. In the U.S., the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) offers a range of services for families, including what to do if your child goes missing and how to find family support.
Child abduction alerts, patterned after the U.S. AMBER Alert, have been implemented in 18 countries, and ICMEC has built a Global Missing Children’s Network of 22 countries.
But perhaps most important are the NCMEC’s tools for keeping children safe in the first place. These include its NetSmartz workshop, which teaches online safety for kids ages five through 17, and Take 25, which encourages parents to routinely take 25 minutes to speak to their children about safety.
